The Albums of 2009

It’s the end of the year, which means there has been a veritable smorgasbord of countdowns flooding the internets. And what a year it has been! 2009 has seen the likes of Michael Jackson’s untimely death, infamous outbursts from Kanye West, and Susan Boyle. And that’s just the highlights (I use the term loosely). Fortunately though, the last year of the noughties has produced some excellent albums. So here’s my two cents: my favourite 10 albums of 2009.

It’s fairly easy to see that there will be two types of reactions to the New Moon soundtrack. One one hand you have the ‘mainstream’ media that will probably rate it highly, calling it something along the lines of ‘a great collection songs from of up-and-coming artists’. Then there’ll be the more indie crowd, who will undoubtedly slam it for encouraging screaming teenage girls to listen to the likes of Thom Yorke, Grizzly Bear and Muse, thereby destroying any credibility these artists ever had in the process. But while it is very, very tempting to just scream ‘sellout!’, after a proper listen the soundtrack actually is…good. Shock horror!

Hungry Beast

Sandwiched between some of the biggest shows of the year, the premiere of ABC’s new current affairs program Hungry Beast last night went almost unnoticed. But for those that did manage to pry their eyes away from the Hey Hey reunion were witness to a very fresh take on news. But did they actually tell us something we didn’t know?

Bloc Party

It all began innocently with a text during my law lecture this afternoon. ‘Bloc party are playing a secret show in the Valley tonight…be there’. And although it wasn’t actually so secret in the end (turns out it was a competition with the Nova radio station, of all things), the gig was incredible. 300 of our (not so) closest friends gathered in the cramped but much-loved Valley Studios to witness another side of Bloc Party seldom heard before.
