Clip of the Day : Is Social Media a ‘fad’?

August 20, 2009

Stumbled upon this earlier today (thanks Musicadium). It’s definitely an interesting clip, and it poses even more interesting questions: Is social media a fad? Or is it the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution?

I think many people agree that this ‘trend’, no matter how popular it is, will just end up like most others in history; fallen by the wayside.

And there’s certainly no denying it’s popularity. The other day in my media lecture we were asked how many of us had Facebook. Every single one of us put our hands up. Sure, it’s a little skewed, considering most of us are young adults and actually study media, but there’s no denying this trend has a bit more pulling power then Lycra did in the 80’s.

The fact that Myspace may have already had its heyday and is now losing members (myself included) seems to reinforce the view of social media only being fad-like. I don’t agree though. If they keep innovating and creating new and exciting ways of integrating these media with real life (Apple’s new plans for integrating SM with iTunes is a fine example), I think social media is here to stay.
